Apples huge new office is a lot nicer than yours

Apples huge new office is a lot nicer than yoursApples huge new office is a lot nicer than yoursApple finally put a date on the opening of its unusual spaceship-shaped Apple Park universittsgelnde in Cupertino, California. Apples new campus - with its round, glass structures, built according to the final plan created by founder Steve Jobs all the way back in 2011 - will welcome employees starting this April, the company said. The new building, which will house more than 12,000 employees, promises to offer a working experience that has not yet existed anywhere else. Employees will have a fitness center that sprawls over 100,000 square feet - making the workout center alone as large as a White House and a half. The futuristic closed-loop design features Jobs clean design sensibility, which will even include some witty nods to the companys products. Both the elevator buttons and the sleek toilets are reportedly inspired by the iPhone, according to Reuters. The entire main building, cons tructed from enormous curved glass panels, will be 2.8 1000000 square feet spread over four stories. The new building will be green in every way, surrounded by acres of trees and miles of paths, and running 100% on renewable energy. It will also be the biggest naturally ventilated building in the world, expected to operate without heating or air conditioning for three-quarters of the year.Steve Jobs TheaterIn a nod to the late founders influence, Apple will name a portion of the campus, a 1,000-seat theater for employees, after Jobs. The company noted that the theater sits at one of the highest points of the campus, providing an overview of the entire park - perhaps a significant nod to the memory of Jobs ever-watchful eye.The round building should provide an unusual workspace, though its not clear yet what it will look like. Architect Norman Foster hassaid employees working in Apple Park will be able to collaborate by moving up, down, and across the building. Its not yet visible ho w precisely employees will move through the building, which, from earlier drone shots overseeing construction, looks like a doughnut with a large empty space in the middle, making for long walks from one side to another. Apple itself may not yet know how employees will interact in their new workspaces, since the building is going to be under construction for another six months after the April opening. In life, Steve Jobs focused intensely on office design. Jobs even mandated that employees at Pixar all be forced to use the same bathrooms near the lobby, to encourage serendipitous personal encounters, according to biographer Walter Isaacson.Until Apple employees move in, the company is focusing on the campus as a tribute to Jobs memory, including a ceremony tomorrow to name the auditorium after Jobs, on what would have been his 62nd birthday. Current Apple CEO Tim Cook elaborated on Jobs past plans for Apples future campus.Steves vision for Apple stretched far beyond his time with us. He intended Apple Park to be the home of innovation for generations to come, he said. The Apple Park campus, planted near Santa Clara, California, has drawn intense interest. Drones have sailed over it to capture footage and the spaceship-shaped new campus should prove a draw for a new visitors center nearby with an Apple store and a cafe.Jobs widow, Laurene Powell Jobs, said she thinks the Apple Park captures his essence.Steve was exhilarated, and inspired, by the California landscape, by its light and its expansiveness, she said. It was his favorite setting for thought. Apple Park captures his spirit uncannily well.Employees will be the judge of how productive and collaborative the new space will make them, and whether it will have the same effect on their work as Jobs infamously exacting presence.

Finding it hard to come up with creative ideas, even though thats what you do for a living every day?Dont worry youre far from alone in this. Most interior designers struggle to sell themselves effectively. But your lack of a killer resume is hurting your career and ensuring that you are being passed over for people who are often less qualified.I specialize in resume writing for creative professions, and in this post I want to show you my top 5 secrets for creating a killer interior design resume.Interior Design Resume Secret 1 Know Your Target AudienceWhen working on a design for a commercial interior, you begin with a focus on the ultimate customer the person who will work in the office, visit the store, or rent a flat in the property. You work to understand what will appeal to him and then you create your design with that in mind. If youre designing a clie nts home, you go through the saatkorn process what is important to her? How does she use her home? What are her interests and values? The same principle applies when youre writing a resume. If you know who will be reading it, you can shape the message accordingly. To do this, you need to think about the type of company you want to work for. Is it a large firm where you will be one of a team of designers? Or would you prefer a smaller company where you might be the sole creative? Is the culture entrepreneurial and energetic? Or is it traditional and structured?Once you have built a picture of the ideal company, you can carefully target your resume. Youll know what skills or traits to highlight, what words to use, and which parts of your background will be most interesting to readers.Interior Design Resume Secret 2 Whats Your Unique Value? You have a unique blend of skills, characteristics and experiences that make you different from every other designer looking for a job. In order to w rite a truly effective resume, you need to define exactly what this unique blend is well call this your value proposition.Ask yourself what separates you from other designers? Is it your innate sense of colour? Perhaps its the results youve achieved in designing successful restaurants? Or maybe its that you have a natural talent for multi-tasking in fast-paced, somewhat crazy environments. You can see why knowing your ideal company is so important. Wha t keywords must you include given your knowledge of your ideal company? How can you demonstrate your unique value through success stories? What is the best resume design to reinforce your message? You must make all behauptung decisions before you start writing. That way, you can be sure that when they your ideal employer reads your resume, he or she will immediately understand why they should hire you.Interior Design Resume Secret 4 Include Client TestimonialsHopefully you have letters or emails from happy clients and these make a powerful addition to your resume.Marketers use testimonials frequently because they know how effective they are. After all, if company x raves about their product, you will probably discount what they say because they are self-interested. But if you hear a series of rave reviews for the same product, you will take them much mora seriously. The same applies to using testimonial quotes on your resume. (Heres more on why quotes are so powerful) and here is an i nterior designer resume that makes excellent use of quotes.Interior Designer Resume Secret 5 Make sure your resume includes important keywords. Most employers now use applicant tracking systems to screen out candidates before the resume is even seen by a human being. The computer system scans each resume for relevant keywords (predetermined by the recruiter) and then either passes or fails the candidates. This means you must include all the right keywords in your resume. Encouraging Employee Involvement Helps People Thrive

Encouraging Employee Involvement Helps People Thrive Encouraging Employee Involvement Helps People Thrive How to recruit, retain, reward, and motivate staff regularly tops your interest list. Doing these well is the most important strategic role of the manager or the Human Resources professional. In what other capacities can you contribute more to the success of your organization than in encouraging employee involvement and employee engagement? Employee involvement and employee engagement matter to your organizations success. In The New Pioneers: The Men and Women Who are Transforming the Workplace and the Marketplace, Thomas Petzinger, Jr., discussed the pieces of a powerful revolution currently reshaping the face of American business. HR professionals leading the charge on these is recommended for their personal relevance and professional support of their organizations. Petzinger, the former longtime writer of the Wall Street Journal column, The Front Lines, and the author of two additional books, drew his conclusions from corporate case studies of companies in more than forty cities in thirty states and worldwide. Some of his most important conclusions are highlighted in this article. The highlighted workplaces demonstrate environments in which motivated people choose to work. Employee Involvement Lives in a Workplace Where People Thrive Being good in business calls on being good at being human, Petzinger concluded after studying the turnaround of Rowe Furniture Company. Rowe, which had been a very traditional manufacturing company, identified the need to utilize the brains and talent of its employees. Charlene Pedrolie, its manufacturing chief, truly believed that the people doing the work should design how the work is done. With the assistance and consultation from a much-reduced management team and engineers, workers redesigned their work. They moved from an environment in which each person handled part of a work process to fully cross-trained manufacturing cells producing a whole product. From standing at an assembly position all day long, they created work which allowed some freedom and movement. They eliminated the formerly deadly dull jobs. At the same time, the flow of information they received, which allowed them to know exactly how they were performing, increased dramatically. The new sense of personal control, according to Petzinger, bred a culture of innovation in every corner of the plant... It reveals the creative power of human interaction. It suggests that efficiency is intrinsic; that people are naturally productive; that when inspired with vision, equipped with the right tools, and guided by information about their performance, people will build on each others actions to a more efficient result than any single brain could design. Tap Staff Potential Through Employee Involvement In his company research, Petzinger found important and consistent themes relating to vision, employee involvement, control, measurement of work processes, simplicity, communication, fun and energizing environments, excellent work tools and training, and commitment. If you can create these in your organization, youll retain your committed, motivated employees. At HalfPrice books, Pat Anderson, the late founder, recognized the importance of having not just a big vision, but one that benefits society. People are energized by feeling as if they are part of something bigger than themselves. She also believed that day-to-day management was about tracking information not controlling people. She also encouraged a sense of play at work, realizing it was good for the business. Teams for Employee Involvement in Continuous Improvement At Monarch Marking Systems, Jerry Schlaegel and Steve Schneider had a deep respect for the minds of their workers. When confronted with a workplace in which people had been paid not to think, they instituted a small set of simple rules to break that mindset. They required people to participate in teams that were formed specifically to improve a particular performance numeric. Teams were allowed no more than thirty days to form the team, study a problem or opportunity, and implement a solution. Perhaps a bit heavy-handed to start, the success of over 100 teams has created a new culture within the organization. Petzinger quotes Herb Kelleher, founder and Executive Chairman of the Board of Southwest Airlines, a company known for its profitability, its dedication to people, and a fun and energized work environment. Ive never had control and I never wanted it, says Kelleher...If you create an environment where people truly participate, you dont need control. They know what needs to be done and they do it. I sought out the source and added more from Kelleher. He continued, Were not looking for blind obedience. Were looking for people who on their own initiative want to be doing what theyre doing because they consider it to be a worthy objective. I have always believed that the best leader is the best server. And if youre a servant, by definition youre not controlling. More Examples of Employee Involvement and Employee Engagement Great Harvest Bread Company owners realize that franchise owners learn the most from each other. Others can learn from Pete and Laura Wakemans philosophy of rewarding knowledge and innovation sharing. They pay half the cost of a franchise owner or employee’s travel to any other franchise in the country to pick up new ideas. This reimbursement is deducted from franchise fees, so the people that travel the most for ideas  pay the least royalties.Bill Armstrong founded Armstrong Ambulance which had grown to 300 employees serving 350 patients a day. Armstrong recruited and retained the most experienced and loyal paramedics by providing the best tools, the best vehicles, and the best training in his industry in the region. According to Petzinger, an employee, using different words, but conveying the same thought, described the rewards of working at Armstrong as belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization, all in one. Employees were proud to work for Anderson and to know that when the y showed up at an emergency room, the staff respected their experience. Dupont Manager, Richard Knowles, when leading a manufacturing plant in a more participatory manner, decided to stop setting goals for people because he always set them too low. He discovered that when people found meaning in their work, he could count on them donating their discretionary energy. This is the energy, enthusiasm, and hard work available, beyond the minimum required to keep a job, when people work in conditions that allow them to find meaning at work. This is the energy organizations want to tap to fully utilize employee involvement and employee engagement for organizational and personal success. While this article has focused on several of the people aspects of Petzinger’s findings, Petzinger talks about the actions of groundbreaking pioneers in other areas as well. He discusses their devotion to customer service, as in give the customer exactly what they want when they want it. In Everyone a Middleman, he emphasizes connections and dependencies that result in the alliances companies make as small businesses to serve larger customers. (Think outsourcing HR functions.) He points out that almost every business is a family business, to one degree or another. He is excited that business concerns and social concerns are blending in this new economy. For a uniquely satisfying, even uplifting experience, read The New Pioneers: The Men and Women Who are Transforming the Workplace and the Marketplace. Petzinger cites company after company, building profitable businesses, that are people and customer-oriented dreams. You wont want to miss Petzingers beautiful writing and visionary thinking. You may want to think about changing organizations. These companies described are successful because their employees thrive. Got it?

LGBTQ employees on what matters to them in the workplace

LGBTQ employees on what matters to them in the workplace LGBTQ employees on what matters to them in the workplace As Pride Month rounds out, it is important to remember that celebrating diversity and inclusion isn’t only welcomed from June 1 to June 30 â€" but year round. Especially if you aspire to attract a diverse workforce, instituting policies and practices that make dynamic communities feel welcome, appreciated and valued is key.The tricky part, of course, is making sure your efforts hit the mark - without making those who identify as LGBTQ feel uncomfortable or spotlighted ineffectively. Not sure how to start the brainstorming session or the shift in mindset or routine? Here, gay employees provide their insight on what really matters to them in the workplace:Host pride month celebrationsDid you check this one off this year? Awesome. If not - get planning now to ensure you’re outwardly and internally pausing to celebrate Pride month. Senior account executive at Finn Partners, Zander Wharton explains as a community, many struggle with feeling different, and the month of June serves as a time to unite, bonding over those differences in a meaningful way. When a business is forthright with their support, Wharton says employees will feel more comfortable and empowered to be themselves.“It’s important to me to work for a company that not only recognizes the month of June as Pride Month but also one that helps to celebrate its LGBT employees during this time,” he notes. As an example, Finn Partners’ June newsletter included a note from the CEO, illustrating his - and the corporation’s proactive commitment to inclusion.Commit to diversity in hiringWhile by law, it is vital to hire the right person for the gig, dependent on their laundry list of characteristics - from race to age and beyond. Even so, diversifying employees while hiring will make for a much more creative, inclusive workspace. As founder and chief creative officer Tim Haughinberry at Back Bar USA explains, they purposefully include all sexual identities, religions, races, ages, and attitudes. â €œThis allows us to excel at what we do, as our clients are as diverse as our employees. Our diversity also allows us to associate, integrate and adapt to many types of personalities, which gives our company an extra edge,” he shares.Allow those to come as they areThis might seem like a no-brainer, but too many employers have dress codes or unspoken eyebrow raises that can make it difficult to fully present their authentic self to clients, co-workers and beyond.“If I can’t be myself in the workplace - sharing who I am, what I do on weekends, or who my partner is - then it’s not an environment I want or need to be in,” director of Lucky Break PR in San Francisco, Phillip Sontag says. “It’s really important for me to be myself and that includes being a part of the LGBTQ+ community.”Have empathy and be understandingEven if, as a manager, you also identify as LGBT- no person can ever fully understand the background or current state of a person’s mindset, hardships or needs. This is why lead barber at Best Barber Greg Cooper Spencer says empathy should be at the core of all companies. Especially those who aim to be inclusive.“So often many voices go unrecognized because they don’t fit into the idea that we’ve been groomed to expect to see in certain situations, I face this problem still to this day even with a celebrity clientele,” he shares. “For this reason, I have a great deal of empathy for those individuals in pursuit of dreams that are silenced without being given an opportunity to be acknowledged at the very least.”Provide benefits for significant othersEven those senior advisor for AppleCare, Kyle Ankney is single, he has one non-negotiable for any company he chooses to accept an offer from: Benefits for significant others. In addition to any social events or discussions that could set the tone for a company, outwardly backing an employee’s personal life speaks volumes.“The ability to share benefits with your significant other: Being able to share healthcare; the ability leave company-provided life insurance to that person, and a 401K is a must,” he notes.Bring groups togetherWhether it is through happy hours, team-building exercises or other events, Wharton stresses the importance of bringing minority employee communities together within the workplace.“The LGBTQ community often feels is that of being alone. We’re in constant search of feeling included and we find this often times in our ‘chosen family’: those that may not be blood-related to us but that are emotionally close enough to play a significant role in our lives,” he explains. When you provide easy opportunities for like-minded employees to connect, they will feel supported and able to express themselves, while building both personal and professional relationships.Commit to fighting LGBT rightsThis can go as far as you are comfortable, but Ankney says to set themselves apart, a company must truly embrace the LGBT community by ac tively taking a stance on furthering their rights.“The reality is, the fight for equality is ongoing, and working for a company that is willing to make a statement and take a stance on LGBT issues when appropriate, creates a work-environment that accepts and embraces diversity, and sparks a deeper sense of pride and loyalty from me as an individual,” he shares.

The problem is, though, that the places where you’re looking are where 99.9% of your competition is also looking. So, let’s talk about other, more fruitful avenues you can take to uncover better opportunities for yourself. Graduate from Career Builder, Monster, and Indeed The good news for candidates is the recent release of Google for Jobs. Google for Jobs is the biggest job-related search engine, bigger than Indeed, bigger than Monster, and bigger than LinkedIn. Google also has partnered with some of the major job search boards so that their listings are now in Google for Jobs. The platform is unbelievably intuitive and easy to use. Open a blank page in Google and type in the job title you’re targeting. Google, being a location-based search engine, so will show you job opportunities matching that title in your location. If you're relocating, you can change the location â€" that is just one parameter or filter that Google for Jobs provides. Google will ask you what industries you're interested in, as well as what employers you're interested in. Making these choices allows you to drill down and get more specific. Specify the sector you work in Beyond Google for Jobs, there are several additional pockets of the Internet you can tap into where all of your competition will not be. For example, if your history is in academia and you want to continue along in academia, then look at websites that end in .edu. If you’re in the non-profit sector, identify the non-profit organizations you're interested in, based on either their cause or their location, then concentrate your search on .org websites. When you search this way, it's more strategic, it's more targeted, and I promise you that a thousand of your closest competitors are not flocking to those sites. When you dig a bit deeper into Google for Jobs, the .edu sites, and the.org sites, you will uncover more opportunities that closely align with what you want to do, your particular brand of expertise, and the specific value that you have to offer to your next employer. Engineering On The Fly

Engineering On The Fly Engineering On The Fly Engineering On The Fly Do you think fishing is just a rod and a reel? Try telling that to the loyal community inhabiting the sport known as fly fishing. I always say its a combination of art and science, says Kurt Van Wyck, who received his mechanical engineering degree from the University of Dayton, and is presently vice president of product development for Sage Manufacturing , a company that manufactures fly fishing equipment. On the science side, a lot of engineering goes into testing material and manufacturing. Looking at alignment on down, but also people expressing themselves through the design, says Van Wyck. We use SolidWorks for reels, do so much cycle testing. Its much more than just creating a style. Van Wyck says delivering proper equipment comes down to appreciating the different goals of the sports. For reels, its much different if catching a 150-pound fish than if going after a small trout, he says. Its a lot of use of drag depending on the specific fisheries. Many companies just have fly reels tightening till the level you want but, with us, its a one-revolution knob and takes it through the drag to whats appropriate for the fishing need. You want drag material that doesnt compress and is repeatable. You also want your engineering reel to handle the heat and dissipate the heat thats in it and not damage the drag materials and surfaces. The majority of reels offered by Sage are made out of Aluminum 6061. Chris Andersen, Sage Manufacturings technical service manager, testing gear in Southwest Alaska. Image: Sageflyfish.com For the 180 different kinds of rods the company offers, thickness runs the gamut. We can actually have the tip of it with only two layers of material on itvery delicateand were constantly testing if the structure can handle the stress, he says. Theres a great deal of engineering that goes into these thin-wall tubes for flexing, where they can go as much as 180 degrees without having them fail. As far as the rod material, Van Wyck says the prep material looks like rolls of fabric but its rolled on paper steel and compressed and baked in the oven. Then the epoxy is put over the carbon fiber. There are also requirements for impact. If youre casting and hit the rod with the fly, you have impact happening to it and want to create structures that minimize damage to the rod, he says. We do structure analysis, bending and breaking parts to evaluate products from suppliers but also the way we put them together. The most popular rod for Sage Manufacturing is a 590-4 for a trout application, he says. In the two years hes been with the company, Van Wyck has been truly blown away by the romance of the sport. Its a passion sportthe level people go to is off the charts, he says. Some are competitive casters going for accuracy and distance, some fish to check out different species, and theyre a very knowledgeable group You have to put out high level equipment because theyll definitely know if you dont. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion We use SolidWorks for reels, do so much cycle testing. It’s much more than just creating a style. Kurt Van Wyck, Sage Manufacturing

This 1976 referral letter called Steve Jobs a joker and flakey

This 1976 referral letter called Steve Jobs a joker and flakey This 1976 referral letter called Steve Jobs a joker and flakey Steve Jobs may have been one of the greatest minds of our time, but he didn’t come across that way when he was launching the Apple 1 computer back in the mid-70s.According to letters  written by Mike Rose in 1976, a Silicon Valley advertising executive, after speaking with Jobs on the phone he found the project they were working on to be “flaky” and even called him a “joker.”Jobs had reached out to Rose because he needed   a  company to print the instruction manual for the Apple I  computer he had just built with Steve Wozniak.Clearly his communication skills improved over the years but at this time Rose was not impressed with what he heard on the phone. He wrote a note to his business partner with the following text:“Bob - This joker (attached) is going to be calling you. Somebody at Regis McKenna recommended us (you). They are 2 guys - they build kits - operate out of a garage - want our catalog sheets. Wants it for nothing. Wouldn’t trust me. Told him we’d like to see what they’ve got - we’d estimate - then decide.Sounds flakey. Watch it!Mike”Little did he know those two guys had just built a game changing machine. The letter is now preserved in the Department of Special Collections at Stanford University. It clearly was a different time as two guys building a piece of technology in a garage today would sound like a hot startup but back then it was atypical and therefore seen as risky by much of Silicon Valley.Plus an innovative CEO and founder who isn’t a fabulous communicator is the status quo with many startups these days. Clearly he needed some phone call etiquette training.Check out a copy of the original letter below.

Things to Avoid As Undergrads Preparing for Law School

Things to Avoid As Undergrads Preparing for Law School Things to Avoid As Undergrads Preparing for Law School So you want to be a lawyer - congratulations! The law is a noble, challenging, and rewarding area of study. While you’re still in the process of earning your bachelor’s degree, you should already be preparing for entering into the study of law. There are many resources about how to prepare - this is to tell you what you shouldn’t be doing if you hope to go to law school. Not Learning How to Study Everyone knows someone who didn’t really need to study in college. This person was naturally smart and was able to coast by on the knowledge they already knew and some luck. One thing is for certain - this person should not be planning to attend law school. If you don’t know how to study, you need to learn while in your undergraduate program, because the ability to study will make all the difference in law school. Choosing a Humanities Major When You’re Not Passionate About the Subject There is a myth that only a degree in the humanities will prepare you for law school. This is categorically untrue, so stop believing it! Law school admissions are competitive, so you should find some way to stand out as an applicant. One way you could do that is to come from a non-traditional field of study to enter the law. Many law schools are now looking especially at graduates of STEM programs, as they generally possess the analytical and critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in law. Choosing Only Easy Classes so Your GPA Stays High Yes, the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC) and each individual law school look at your grades as part of your application, so a high GPA is important. However, they also look at the degree of difficulty of the courses on your transcript, and they take those into account as well. Don’t sell yourself short in college - do the work and challenge yourself, and you’ll likely be rewarded. Not Preparing Enough for the LSAT, or Waiting Too Long to Take It The LSAT is another important factor in law school admissions, and it is offered four times each year. Unfortunately, the LSAT is different from any other standardized admission test that you’ll see, because the knowledge you’re learning in your undergraduate education likely won’t help you prepare for it. You have to commit to studying for the LSAT for at least three months in order to learn how to think in the way that will allow you to succeed on the exam. And don’t wait too long to take it! You should aim to have your applications in by the fall of your senior year of undergrad, so keep that in mind as you prepare as well. Not Getting Involved in College Grades are important for your law school application, as is your LSAT score. Also important, though, is having some extracurriculars on your resume. Play a sport, join a society, volunteer, or gain an internship. These things will show what you are interested in and what you are passionate about, which makes you look like a well-rounded applicant. Getting in Trouble While it should be self-explanatory that you should avoid indiscretions while preparing for law school, it is still worth mentioning. Having any legal citations, or even any disciplinary sanctions through your undergraduate institution, could affect your chances of getting into law school. Have you already gotten in trouble? Dont count yourself out, but keep your record clean for the remainder of your schooling. Not Building Relationships With Professors Another crucial aspect of law school applications are the letters of recommendation from professors. This is why it’s a really good idea to start forming relationships with professors early on in your college career. A professor can’t write a glowing letter of recommendation if they don’t know anything about you, after all. Not Considering the Cost of Law School Law school is expensive - it is an unfortunate fact. While you are still completing your undergraduate education, you should start thinking about how you are going to finance your legal education. If you already have large student loans, you could consider working for a couple of years in between in order to make payments on some of them. The general rule of thumb is to never rack up more student loans than your starting salary the first year out of school. This may not be feasible for everyone, but it is something that you should think about before applying to law school. Choosing to go to law school is a brave and rewarding choice to make, so you should make sure that you are preparing yourself in the right ways. If you can avoid these eight things and are on track with your law school application process, you should do just fine. Good luck!
